Serena and Venus Williams advance to Quarterfinals

10:00am – 1:00pm: Wimbledon Ladies’ Quarterfinals – NBC LIVE

"Those ingrates to whom the miracle of the Williams sisters has lost its freshness will have been especially vexed that Maria Sharapova, one of the only females in the species competent to interrupt their duopoly here, should be flung into the path of Serena as early as the fourth round." Serena forced into top gear to tame Sharapova by Chris McGrath at Wimbledon, The Independent 29 June 2010

"Beyond Serena’s larger-than-life personality, she is someone who succeeds with a less-is-more technique that puts her at the head of the class in the game’s three main dimensions – forehand, backhand and serve. Sometimes lost in all her grunting and screeching as she hits the ball is that she is extremely technically sound. There is no excess motion on her ground strokes and her serve is a study in measured efficiency." Serena’s mental toughness matches her physical gifts by Tom Tebbutt, The Globe and Mail

Fragile X and a Gay History

As someone who loves people with Autism, gay people and gay people with Autism, I hope we can end the debate about homosexuality being a moral issue, and begin to look, openly, rationally, with compassion and without judgment, at the biology behind Autism and the related spectrum disorders such as anxiety and ADHD. The studies cited here might also shed light as to why Autism is found mostly in boys.

I hope this post lends clues on finding understanding and ways to help and support, not to cure to change people, for love doesn't need a cure, but is the cure.

By Rich Shull: Fragile X and a Gay History From PBS -WGBH Boston 1993 and Earlier Fragile X Studies

"Long before Autism and Fragile X were Buzz words and Autism Folks jumped on the band wagon of fragile X syndrome and also adopted it as rally call of Autism and evelated it to a high status with in autism. It was BIG NEWS in the GLBT community! It was seen as a predictor of If was one was Gay or not. The late 1980s were abuzz with Autism and Fragile X syndrome and they were the talk of the gay press.

"Of Course, Fragile X and Gay have never been mentioned in Autism Circles and odds are they will never be admitted to in autism at least BUT IF people were actually put faith in Fragile X and Indeed accepted ALL the studies of Fragile X they would have to naturally look for gay (LBT) autistic people. INDEED we are here on line and our anthropology is the best performing autistic population. Autism will not even admit to any one in the GLBT spectrum even IF their own studies beg to ask or make the point to "LOOK HERE". The following is a general Interest GLBT Fragile X syndrome article from the Web. It is Copyrighted to WGBH Boston a PBS Station. Rich Shull" Fragile X and a Gay History by Rich Shull, Pre Rain Man Autism February 26, 2006

What is Fragile X? - fragilex.org

"Like other genetic diseases carried on the X chromosome, Fragile X syndrome strikes boys more often and more severely than girls. Girls have two X chromosomes, so a normal gene on one chromosome can mitigate the effects of the disease if the gene on the other X chromosome is abnormal. Boys, however, have only one X chromosome, so if they inherit an abnormal gene on the X chromosome, they have no protection." Interview with Temple Grandin - Wrongplanet.net
What follows is the transcript text of my video interview With Temple Grandin. A video and transcript of her FutureQuest keynote speech will be available in the future.

"WP: So if there were something that cured all the autism genes, you wouldn't support that?.

TG:No, I would not support that. becase there is a point where mild autistic traits are part of normal human variation. Because on the other end of the spectrum you have Williams Syndrome, and if you look at the brain abnormalities, they're exactly the opposite of autism. The whole back of the brain, where the hard drive is--there isn't too much there. But all the social emotional circuits are hooked up so [people with Williams Syndrome] are hyper, hyper, social. I'm gonna bet you there's a lot of yackety yackety salesman that don't talk about much of anything who are Williams Syndrome variants. But then you get to a point where a person [with Autism] cannot talk, they're self inuring themselves, and they cannot live independently. That [is something] you would want to eliminate, if possible, but you would not want to get rid of all the autism genes because you wouldn't have any computers-- you wouldn't have any scientists.

WP: I know there are groups like Cure Autism Now who are looking to test for Autism before someone is born. What are your thoughts on prenatal testing?

TG: Well, the problem with autistic traits, it's a continuum of traits.

WP: Right, a spectrum

TG: and [with] a little bit of the trait, you get einstein. There is a book called Asperger's and Self Esteem and its about famous scientists and musicians that probably were aspergers.

The genetics of it are probably going to be complicated. There is not going to be one single gene for autism. So I think they're quite a ways away from a genetic test. Its not like fragile x syndrome where there is a very obvious genetic abnormality."

The following article was published in the Salt Lake City Tribune, in a slightly abbreviated form, on May 27th, 2001. "Is homosexuality immutable? Hardly. There is ample evidence that homosexual attraction can be diminished and that changes can be made." 'Twilight': A Mormon Series?

It appears Glenn Beck isn't the only one writing books that cross over from the Mormon Corridor to the Bible Belt, all the way to the Hollywood-sanctified mainstream from a Mormon perspective. It wouldn't be the first time a Christian religious writer made a crossover, as we've witnessed the popularization of books by the greatly respected Christian apologetics and science fiction writer, C.S. Lewis. I am a novice at my understanding of the Mormon religion and its many sects, but the Mormon faith seems to me almost a blend of Roman Catholicism (the belief in lineal succession similar to apostolic succession, sacramental bread similar to communion wafers) with New Age or Buddhism, particularly the belief in becoming gods, or perfected selves.

Mormon imagery runs deep in ‘Twilight’

Chelsea & Marc's upstate wedding plan

"New York Magazine has some new details about Chelsea Clinton's upcoming wedding to Marc Mezvinsky. The nuptials will reportedly be held July 31--but supposedly not on Martha's Vineyard and instead somewhere in New York:

"The wedding planner will contact each guest directly a week in advance and let them know where it is," says the fund-raiser, who speculated that the Hamptons are out because the L.I.E. can be a very long road. The smart money, then, is somewhere upstate, possibly in Westchester or Dutchess County--most likely on property owned by a Clinton supporter..." Chelsea Clinton Wedding Details: When, Who, Where - Huffpost Style

I'm figuring this will be a very beautiful wedding, but for New Yorkers' sake, perhaps we should clarify before the wedding whether the event will in fact take place "upstate", in Westchester or Duchess County...

"This is one of those friendly arguments people in Westchester and the Hudson Valley get into with people when we get to college and meet Long Island and New York City types for the first time in the dorm." (Image: Westchester County is NOT Upstate New York - Localism.com)

Related link:
"There is no clear or official boundary between Upstate New York and Downstate New York. Latitude is generally a consideration in whether or not a place is "upstate", as well as elevation and being away from sea level (hence the prefix "up", meaning both to the north and having a greater altitude). Distance from New York City is also a consideration. Complicating any definition is the usage of the word "upstate" (in lowercase) as a direction, rather than as the name of a region.

"One usage of the term "Upstate" excludes only New York City and Long Island. Another usage locates the Upstate/Downstate boundary further north at the point at which New York City's suburbs segue into its exurbs. This line would place most, but not all, of Westchester and Rockland counties south of the boundary, putting the northwestern edge of Rockland as well as the northernmost quarter of Westchester (such as Peekskill) in Upstate New York. Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam counties are the northernmost counties of the state of New York that are within the New York metropolitan area, with Putnam being the northernmost of all.

"One traditional, political definition of Upstate is "north of Bear Mountain," hence the "Bear Mountain Compact" describing where "open secrets stay secret."[1][not in citation given] (...) Particularly within Upstate New York, the definition of the word "upstate" is often much further north." Upstate New York - Wikipedia

Happy Father's Day

Christian singer-songwriter Bob Carlisle is best known in the US for his wedding classic "Butterfly Kisses" (played during a father-daughter dance at the reception), but this is one of my favorite songs by the artist. The production and basic feel of the song remind me of Gloria Estefan "Here We Are", although they were released 7 years apart.

Happy Father's Day to all of the men of their word, of all walks of life around the world, who have done all they could to keep their children safe, and given them the love, affection, smarts and good values they need to grow happy and healthy each day.

Is it ever right to hit a woman?

Gone are the days when nice boys were taught never to hit a woman. Today, men (and some women as well) rationalize battery by saying women wanted equal rights and now they got it. They can't tell the difference between equal human rights and equal physical strength. Or, they do, and use this theory to justify their violence and hatred of women, anyway. I'm usually one who looks forward and never back, but on days like these, I long for more chivalrous, genteel times. No, not that there wasn't violence against women back then (it seems there always has been), but it's disheartening to hear so many young people on the net justify hitting a woman, as if basic human decency to love and respect women, and to defend the helpless, have gone out of style.

Is it ever right to hit a woman? No, since those who are comparatively weak and defenseless even if they are visually of the same size (or larger, even), are quite easy to restrain by other means if necessary. I mean, we can argue about what to do in the case of a woman trying to kill you with a lethal weapon, say, wielding a chainsaw, but in most day-to-day cases, the argument of self-defense is grossly misused to justify shameful abuse. We always say women should leave domestic violence. Perhaps men, too, should leave a violent relationship before it escalates to such an extreme degree that you're waiting for the day you can have your reason to hit a woman back. We need to get our heads out of game world; in real life, men can, and do, end up seriously injuring or killing women by not knowing, and being responsible for, their own strength.

"Suppose a man and a woman are quarreling at a nightclub. If the man throws a glass of whiskey at the woman he has assaulted her, and men are prosecuted for such. In contrast, a woman who throws a drink at a man is merely expressing her outrage. What sort of wuss would call the police and try to prosecute a woman over a splash of whiskey? Any man who did so would not be welcome back at the bar." (...) "A chimp such as Champ who supports the damsel may gain opportunities to mate with her later, while one who refuses his support will also be remembered and treated accordingly. And so too among our own. Men who uphold women against offending men gain their respect, and perhaps their favors, while men who ignore women lose out. So nature programs men to support women in distress and to stand strongly against the dastardly scumbags who cross them." Chivalry Lives On - Chivalry | Opposites as Equals oppositesex.info

Top 10 lame excuses men make to justify violence against women by Byron Hurt | Posted March 19, 2009 The Daily Voice

"Averting the trope hasn't become old-hat just yet, although it's considered an "equal opportunity" kind of violence. It's usually pointed out before it's done, usually with some variation of "Well, you're no lady."" Wouldn't Hit a Girl - TVtropes.org

"By the ordinance of the queen there was set a quest of ladies on Sir Gawaine, and they judged him for ever while he lived to be with all ladies, and to fight for their quarrels; and that he should ever be courteous, and never refuse mercy to him that asketh mercy...[and] that he should never be against lady nor gentlewoman, but if he fought for a lady and his adversary fought for another."

My June Top 10 Fragrances of the Moment

After a very long hiatus, I'm going to share with my faithful perfume-loving readers my current Top 10 favorite fragrances. I hope you'll be inspired to make your own lists of favorites, blog about them and inspire me with some new fragrances to try. My list is made up of tried-and-true olfactive beauties from all fragrance families, and a vast scope of launch years...

My egalitarian Top 10 List, June 2010

1. Kenzo Amour
2. Guerlain Les Secrets de Sophie (and no, I still don't own this baby)
3. Miss Dior Cherie L'Eau
4. Givenchy Very Irrésistible
5. L'Instant de Guerlain
6. Kenzo Amour Florale
7. Loree Rodkin Gothic II oil
8. Comptoir Sud Pacifique Caramel Sunset
9. Guerlain Vol de Nuit
10. Sisley Eau du Soir

I must rave about KenzoAmour, a lasting love in my life which I can summarize as an Aldehydic Floral Oriental with a mildly spicy, almost herbaceously prickly edge. The graceful, modern serpentine bottle matches the spiky-yet-creamy, "rice powder"-ish semi-sweet Gourmand skin scent very well.

I've been taking someone's advice from some years back, to wear fragrances on clothes, not directly on skin. See? I can be flexible when I want to be. :-)
