Some Post-FiFi 2011 Thoughts

Untitled Maison Martin Margiela moodiereport.com

After attending the US FiFi 2011, there are several fragrances I really want to try, but at the top of the list are Untitled Maison Martin Margiela and Eva by Eva Longoria (Takasago). Any perfume that made the list of finalists in the Perfume Extraordinaire division alongside Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady and winner Untitled Maison Martin Margiela (Givaudan /L'Oreal)(links to Coûte que Coûte blog) deserves a respectful sniff.

Untitled has a wait list that's almost as long as the one for Illuminum White Gardenia Petals, another on my list of must tries this year.

There is no doubt the Perfume Extraordinaire division, even the finalists of which were left to be announced until the very end of the ceremony (not long after the announcement of the Luxe Men's and Women's winners) is the pièce de résistance of the FiFi, to be the center of perfume discussion in the months ahead.

The notes for Eva are as follows:
Top: Bergamote, Citruses, Neroli, Aldehydes
Middle: Jasmine, Freesia, Lily-of-the-Valley, Violet
Bottom: Musk, Sandalwood, Amber

Chanel Bleu for Men

Although I hadn't fallen head over heels in love with the recent feminine launches by Chanel, Bleu de Chanel for Men is a tasteful Fougère launch featuring woody notes made sporty-aqueous and citrusy-fresh. It reminds me of a less lemony, slightly more traditionally masculine version of Zirh Ikon. Bleu isn't really all that sweet, although nutmeg lends a sweet/savory warm spice note. If Juicy Couture Dirty English was almost your speed until it got too sweet, try this.

Roja Dove's Fragrance Description
Mint adds it’s cool freshness to a note of Grapefruit which is sweetened by sensual Jasmine and warmed by Cedarwood, Vetiver, and spicy Ginger, and Nutmeg. www.worlddutyfree.com

Fragrance of the Moment

One of the great olfactory feats of the pre-turn of the millenium that turned an anisic accord into a starring role, with a hypersweet overdose of liqueur-like intensity, this 1998 bestseller went where even Dior Hypnotic Poison wouldn't go. Its sweetness and intensity so piercing, the only sensation I could aptly compare it to would be Sambuca liqueur, which tastes like licorice-infused rocket fuel. Beautifully packaged in a now-iconic apple-shaped flacon, and originally marketed through an ad campaign greatly resembling that of Anjou's Devastating perfume whereby a female figure is seen lying in the forest, the "temptation" theme is complete with hues of an enchanted forest, of purple (flacon), green (box) and gold (cap). It has been reintroduced time and time again in limited edition presentations such as “Star Dusts” (2005); in the miniature perfume collectors' world, Lolita Lempicka minis were sold in a myriad of styles such as a royal carriage theme. Upon beholding these little temptations unto themselves, it's difficult not to squeal very quietly under one's breath, "kawaii!!" before doing an about face, to go pine away in private lest one feels tempted too much.

But the longstanding success of Lolita Lempicka has everything to do with the actual scent along with its memorable combination of packaging (visual) and name (auditory). The true temptation is the substance within, the aroma at once comforting / familiar, and jarring. Perhaps a hypersweet Gourmand (Woody Oriental) is to fragrance wearers what the electric guitar is to music listeners; some people will never take to it, as it feels too foreign, unnatural and wrong.

Yet, the fauvist sweetness of Lolita Lempicka elicits comments from cab drivers in the city when I wear it, even in small doses.

"What is that perfume you are wearing?"

"LL. Do you want me to crack the window?"

"No, it's very pleasant."

I have recognized Lolita Lempicka on someone at a Brooklyn restaurant where a classical pianist plays through the dinner hours - a fancy dig for sure - and thought there is no nicer perfume to meld with food aromas than the Sambuca-like LL. There are many reasons why people can't tolerate the Gourmand, especially of this challenging level, but just because a creation is full-bodied, complex and strong, it doesn't have to wear you. You can always be judiciously calculating as to the amount you will wear, and the sillage you will project. Tip: Ask a friend if (s)he thinks it's too much.

The sugary, hydrogenated corn syrupy sweetness, like the bone-crushing sound of an electric guitar maxed out on distortion, goes through me, making me feel immaterial and light. But then, the heavy, wooded-ambery base notes provide a bottom to sink one's teeth into - a real "bottom" to the rhythm of my personal sillage space, pumping, pulsating, edgy and alive. With Lolita Lempicka, I'm reminded once more that a great perfume creation is one which meets both cerebral and physical needs, the pleasure of wearing fragrance derived from that perfectly integrated whole.

Fragrance of the Moment

Hermès Un Jardin sur le Toit is the latest of the Jardin series by Jean-Claude Ellena, a perfumer most widely known for his "minimalist" style, although I think of Ellena as a classic contemporary, rather than a modern contemporary, guy. That's neither here nor there; his own style is unique and distinctive. Although he has created a vast number of different fragrances, his "still life" evocations of nature and the countryside are some of his best known works. His creations are often vegetal and sharp, like French tomato soup - a slightly sour taste, devoid of any sign of sweet ripening of the tomato which, by the way, is technically a fruit like the cucumber, and a relatively unsweet one even at its fullest maturation. Although I wouldn't exaggerate and say this sharp, fresh "garden vegetable" sensation, smelled or tasted, makes me swoon with pleasure, it can be a beautiful scent to wear, creating a green, springlike, dewy sillage, bringing out the nymph or eternal ingenue in us all.

I am a fan of Jardin Apres La Mousson, the Jardin fragrance that came before Un Jardin sur le Toit. I've described it as a gingery watermelon scent, and I still stand by it, except I'd add that there is a wintergreen note in there as well - a note I've come to associate with tuberose. It's a gentle, fresh and spicy scent with equal parts vegetal and sporty, cool, fruity and aqueous character. The Jardin scents preceding that were also interesting, among them, one smelling of fig leaves, another of unripe green fruit. Even the ones I couldn't wear were interesting, and tasteful in the same way French cuisine, fancy or not, is refined. I'd anticipated Jardin sur le Toit to smell fresh, with nose-pricking sharp elements like tomato or violet leaf and such, but what I got was as unexpected as can be. It's a Fruity Floral! It's a sah-weeeeeet one at that. Imagine starting with strawberry oil, then moving onto Caron Or et Noir crossed with Yosh U4REAHH! ending on a giant woody dark rose a la today's modern chypre a la Narciso Rodriguez. It's decidedly more urbane this time; it's Idylle for the Le Cirque crowd. Kat Von D Sinner comes close, as does Victoria's Secret So In Love, except there is a green, herbaceous tree sap note here, like L'Artisan Parfumeur D'Humeur Jalouse, bringing it all together for a fairly dramatic rooftop garden theme.
