Via NYT: "...The mayor cited threats by President Trump and other Republicans to repeal the Affordable Care Act, pare support for social services and public housing, change the way schools are financed and retaliate against so-called sanctuary cities that resist a crackdown on illegal immigrants.
"But he said that none of those possibilities were reflected in the preliminary budget because it was still unclear which, if any, would occur.
(...)"The mayor also announced that the city’s 10-year capital spending plan would increase to $89.6 billion, from $83.8 billion two years ago. That includes money for school construction, accounting for more than 38,000 new classroom seats, and long-term plans to upgrade a training center for the Police Department and to repair hundreds of roofs in public housing buildings.
"In his initial presentation, Mr. de Blasio did not mention the city’s homelessness crisis, which has become a major vulnerability for him as he has struggles to find a way to care for a record number of people flooding into city shelters." "...The current crisis requires bigger, bolder solutions, and Assemblyman Andrew Hevesi is proposing one. It’s a plan to create a statewide rental subsidy to help families on public assistance stay in their homes. The program, called Home Stability Support, would help bridge the gap between the shelter allowance for public assistance recipients and market rents. Families who face eviction or are forced to move because of domestic violence or hazardous living conditions need a sturdy bridge to permanent housing. But existing aid often isn’t enough to help them avoid the shelter trap." A Bold Plan to Prevent Homelessness by the editorial board, January 23, 2017 The New York Times

"(...) The point is, New York is blessed with more wealth, intelligence and know-how than any city in the world. Why should any child here be homeless?" Business leaders can help fix homelessness in the city - Cuomo, de Blasio should seek fresh ideas from outside of government. By Karen Hinton, Nov. 6, 2016 crainsnewyork.com

From DailyBeast: (...)"With President Donald Trump, a wild card of a candidate voted into office and inaugurated during the convention, performers and business owners alike were concerned about the future of the industry from a President who, as a candidate, signed an anti-porn pledge.
(...)"No one at the convention forgot that his party’s platform has singled out the porn industry, branding it a “public health crisis,” and now that the GOP is in power that could pose a serious problem." Before organizing the Women’s March on Washington, Linda Sarsour fought for Muslim holidays in NYC schools
One of my most poignant and bittersweet memories post-911 is arriving at filming location for Japanese TV in a Muslim American New York neighborhood to see people of the community being verbally harassed by a visibly frightened white male screaming randomly at anyone on the street about Muslims needing to leave, be it children, women or the elderly. I, too, was scared, but more of this man than the people of the community who seemed to find some relief in our crew being there with them that day.
Fast forward years later, I recall Muslim holidays being added to my children's school calendar. Honestly, I had mixed feelings about more holidays of any kind being added while our school chancellor under Mayor De Blasio didn't allow snow days on the worst days to travel. However, it is encouraging to see the three Abrahamic traditions side by side here in our beautifully diverse NYC: Jewish, Christian and Muslim celebrated equally.
I personally don't give an iota if NYC will add Japanese holy days to its calendar; in fact, you won't see me fighting for it. I think Mayor Bloomberg had a point in saying we need more, not less, school days (sorry, kids!), if I'm taking into consideration that students in countries like Japan attend school 6 days a week.

"The defendants are accused of multiple felonies, including hate crimes. Prosecutors said the victim, who was found by the police on Tuesday, was targeted based on his race and his disability. During a Facebook video made by one of the defendants, another can be heard denouncing white people, and, at one point, a man is heard saying he does not care if the victim is schizophrenic.
(...) "People with disabilities are more than twice as likely to be the victims of violent crimes as those without disabilities, according to a Justice Department report based on Census Bureau surveys. And people with mental disabilities are the most likely to be victimized.
(...) "Advocates have said the underlying problem is a pervasive attitude, conscious or not, that people with disabilities are not fully human. They pointed to a recent case in Idaho, where a white high school football player was charged with shoving a coat hanger into the rectum of another teenager, who was black and had mental disabilities, after having harassed the student and directed racial slurs at him for months.
"Though the accused student was 18 at the time of the assault, he was sentenced to probation rather than prison.
(...) "Forty-six of the 50 states have hate crimes laws, according to the Anti-Defamation League, but 17 of them do not specify people with disabilities as a protected group." "In May, the Idaho attorney general’s office filed sexual assault charges against the 19-year-old and two of his teammates, who went on to be charged in juvenile court. They alleged the three suspects lured the special needs student into the locker with the promise of a hug, but instead held him down and shoved a coat hanger into his rectum.
