Mayor de Blasio Proposes Budget of $84.7 Billion

Via NYT: "...The mayor cited threats by President Trump and other Republicans to repeal the Affordable Care Act, pare support for social services and public housing, change the way schools are financed and retaliate against so-called sanctuary cities that resist a crackdown on illegal immigrants.

"But he said that none of those possibilities were reflected in the preliminary budget because it was still unclear which, if any, would occur.

(...)"The mayor also announced that the city’s 10-year capital spending plan would increase to $89.6 billion, from $83.8 billion two years ago. That includes money for school construction, accounting for more than 38,000 new classroom seats, and long-term plans to upgrade a training center for the Police Department and to repair hundreds of roofs in public housing buildings.

"In his initial presentation, Mr. de Blasio did not mention the city’s homelessness crisis, which has become a major vulnerability for him as he has struggles to find a way to care for a record number of people flooding into city shelters." "...The current crisis requires bigger, bolder solutions, and Assemblyman Andrew Hevesi is proposing one. It’s a plan to create a statewide rental subsidy to help families on public assistance stay in their homes. The program, called Home Stability Support, would help bridge the gap between the shelter allowance for public assistance recipients and market rents. Families who face eviction or are forced to move because of domestic violence or hazardous living conditions need a sturdy bridge to permanent housing. But existing aid often isn’t enough to help them avoid the shelter trap." A Bold Plan to Prevent Homelessness by the editorial board, January 23, 2017 The New York Times

Porn in the Age of Trump: Fear and Loathing at AVN in Las Vegas

This news could redeem President Trump in my eyes! However, we all know things won't change so drastically under Republican leadership, any more than they did under Reagan or Bush. We in America still grapple with the effects of pornography on women and relationships, just as no matter how they restrict funding for Planned Parenthood around the world, Roe v. Wade is here to stay.

From DailyBeast: (...)"With President Donald Trump, a wild card of a candidate voted into office and inaugurated during the convention, performers and business owners alike were concerned about the future of the industry from a President who, as a candidate, signed an anti-porn pledge.

(...)"No one at the convention forgot that his party’s platform has singled out the porn industry, branding it a “public health crisis,” and now that the GOP is in power that could pose a serious problem." President Trump on Inauguration Day

This is a photo circulating on the web of Donald Trump walking ahead of instead of waiting to escort his beautiful wife First Lady Melania out of their car on Inauguration Day. People will defend him saying it's not a big deal, but I don't want a president who doesn't have any notion of gentlemanly western chivalry to represent us. To me, chivalry is one major reason America is great. Also, he apparently doesn't wear a wedding ring; I suppose women around the world will take that as they will.

Before organizing the Women’s March on Washington, Linda Sarsour fought for Muslim holidays in NYC schools

One of my most poignant and bittersweet memories post-911 is arriving at filming location for Japanese TV in a Muslim American New York neighborhood to see people of the community being verbally harassed by a visibly frightened white male screaming randomly at anyone on the street about Muslims needing to leave, be it children, women or the elderly. I, too, was scared, but more of this man than the people of the community who seemed to find some relief in our crew being there with them that day.

Fast forward years later, I recall Muslim holidays being added to my children's school calendar. Honestly, I had mixed feelings about more holidays of any kind being added while our school chancellor under Mayor De Blasio didn't allow snow days on the worst days to travel. However, it is encouraging to see the three Abrahamic traditions side by side here in our beautifully diverse NYC: Jewish, Christian and Muslim celebrated equally.

I personally don't give an iota if NYC will add Japanese holy days to its calendar; in fact, you won't see me fighting for it. I think Mayor Bloomberg had a point in saying we need more, not less, school days (sorry, kids!), if I'm taking into consideration that students in countries like Japan attend school 6 days a week.

(Million) Women's March

Women's March is protesting Trump for sexism and objectification of women while legitimizing prostitution and pornography, so you know I won't be there! I'd rather stay home and listen to Steel Panther! Why was it originally called a Million Women March, anyway? Does intersectional feminism have any connection to Million Man March?

Obama Farewell

What can I say about Barack Obama, 44th president of the United States?

A young senator from Chicago took the world by storm in 2008 with his inspiring words of hope and charismatic charm.

Suddenly we crushed on Obama like Obama Girl, then over the next 8 years we came to know and love his beautiful family.

He led with temperance, intelligence and compassion in the eyes of both America and the world.

Together with Michelle, he reminded us of our common humanity with humor, warmth and content of character.

There was no way to not be moved!  Thank you, President Obama, for strengthening families and relationships, showing us that change begins with ourselves, and being you.

Beating of Disabled Teenager Highlights a Crime That Often Goes Unpunished

From NYT:(...) "The victim in the attack here, an 18-year-old white man, suffered from schizophrenia and attention deficit disorder, prosecutors said in court papers filed on Friday. The four accused attackers, ranging in age from 18 to 24, are black. The four appeared on Friday in Cook County Circuit Court and Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil ordered them held without bail.

"The defendants are accused of multiple felonies, including hate crimes. Prosecutors said the victim, who was found by the police on Tuesday, was targeted based on his race and his disability. During a Facebook video made by one of the defendants, another can be heard denouncing white people, and, at one point, a man is heard saying he does not care if the victim is schizophrenic.

(...) "People with disabilities are more than twice as likely to be the victims of violent crimes as those without disabilities, according to a Justice Department report based on Census Bureau surveys. And people with mental disabilities are the most likely to be victimized.

(...) "Advocates have said the underlying problem is a pervasive attitude, conscious or not, that people with disabilities are not fully human. They pointed to a recent case in Idaho, where a white high school football player was charged with shoving a coat hanger into the rectum of another teenager, who was black and had mental disabilities, after having harassed the student and directed racial slurs at him for months.

"Though the accused student was 18 at the time of the assault, he was sentenced to probation rather than prison.

(...) "Forty-six of the 50 states have hate crimes laws, according to the Anti-Defamation League, but 17 of them do not specify people with disabilities as a protected group." Idaho Teens Accused in Coat Hanger Sex Assault of Special Needs Student Won't Do Time

"An Idaho high school football player who was facing charges of sexually assaulting a special needs student with a coat hanger will not serve any prison time as part of a plea deal.

"John R.K. Howard, 18, was initially charged with “forcible sexual penetration by use of a foreign object” after he and two other players allegedly assaulted the 18-year-old victim in the Dietrich High School locker room in Oct 2015.

"Howard agreed to plead guilty to one count of felony injury to a child Friday, according to reports.

"Now, instead of facing life in prison, he will be sentenced to two to three years of probation and 300 hours of community service." Teen Football Player Accused in Coat Hanger Sex Assault of Special Needs Student Won't Do Time by Maya Chung, Inside Edition December 20, 2016 Yahoo News

Added on January 7: "A $10 million civil lawsuit against the school district claims the attack came after months of harassment, assault, and racial discrimination, while accusing the school of ‘deliberate indifference.’ The victim and his adopted siblings are the only black people in their small town of Dietrich, Idaho." John R K Howard coat hanger rapist: How I avoided jail by Christopher Koulouris, December 20, Scallywag & Vagabond

"In May, the Idaho attorney general’s office filed sexual assault charges against the 19-year-old and two of his teammates, who went on to be charged in juvenile court. They alleged the three suspects lured the special needs student into the locker with the promise of a hug, but instead held him down and shoved a coat hanger into his rectum.

"Howard’s attorney, Brad Calbo said the “victim was not at any time pinned down, raped or pinned down and subjected any sort of forcible penetration.”" Ex-football player avoids jail time for assaulting disabled teen by Jessica Schladebeck, New York Daily News December 20, 2016

Chicago torture: Teens stream abuse of special needs man on Facebook Live

Keep in mind when CNN calls the 4 Chicago criminals "teens," they are the same age as the man these 18+ year olds kidnapped and tortured. The victim was an 18 year old with special needs in a racially and politically motivated crime which Chicago police were potentially dismissing as "kids doing stupid things" until a Twitter hashtag citing BLM brought attention by causing a worldwide trend. Updated at 2:52pm: Four charged with hate crime for Chicago Facebook Live attack - BBC

"Four black people face hate crime and kidnapping charges for the Facebook Live-aired torture of a mentally disabled white man.

"Jordan Hill, 18, Tesfaye Cooper, 18, Brittany Covington, 18, and Tanishia Covington, 24, are expected to appear in a Chicago court on Friday.

"In the video, the assailants can be heard making derogatory statements against white people and Donald Trump.

"Chicago police have described the incident as a "sickening"."
